POF vs PVC vs PE Shrink Film: Machine Compatibility Guide

POF, PVC and PE identify broad shrink-film families, not interchangeable machine consumables. POF is often evaluated for clear enclosed overwrap, PVC can remain part of an established customer specification, and PE grades are often evaluated for sleeve wrapping and grouped packs. The correct choice depends on the exact film datasheet, approved package result, product, seal system, tunnel, gauge and customer requirements.

Do not change only the material name on a purchase order. A film change can alter sealing response, shrink force, required heat exposure, optics, stiffness, puncture behavior, cooling and line settings. Approve the film on the actual product and machine.

This table is a starting point, not a film specification. Resin blend, layer structure, orientation, gauge, additives and supplier formulation can change performance within the same material family.

When POF Is the Starting Candidate

POF film is a reasonable starting candidate when clear presentation and a neat enclosed pack are required. Approval still belongs to the exact grade: two POF products can differ in construction, gauge, additives and operating window.

Evaluate:

  • Required clarity and surface appearance.
  • Product edges and puncture risk.
  • Seal-bar design and available sealing window.
  • Shrink force on cartons, trays or flexible products.
  • Barcode, label and print readability after shrinking.
  • Smallest and largest product in the same setup range.

Do not extend an approved POF setup to every bundle. When the package is intentionally open at the ends or must hold grouped units, evaluate a sleeve architecture and the film grade specified for that system.

When PVC Requires Careful Specification Control

PVC shrink film can appear in an established packaging specification. If a customer requires it, obtain the exact technical datasheet and current safety documentation from the film supplier. Follow the machine manufacturer’s compatibility limits and have the site’s environmental, health and safety owner determine ventilation, handling and workplace requirements for the actual product and jurisdiction. Do not assume settings or approvals developed for POF transfer to PVC. Run a controlled trial and record the approved result. Recycling and disposal acceptance also varies by location and receiving program; confirm it with the customer’s policy and the relevant local service rather than making a material-family claim.

When PE Fits the Package Objective

PE shrink-film grades are often considered for sleeve wrapping and grouped packs such as bottles, cans, cartons, trays or industrial bundles. A sleeve package commonly leaves openings at the ends. Whether it can retain a particular load depends on the grade, gauge, seal, package geometry, tray or pad, cooling and handling validation.

PE selection requires attention to:

  • Bundle mass and product stability before the film contracts.
  • Film gauge and sleeve width.
  • Seal strength and seal position.
  • Tunnel heat input, airflow, conveyor support and cooling.
  • Handle openings, tray support and acceptable end openings.
  • Downstream lifting, stacking and transport tests.

An attractive bundle is not enough. Confirm that units stay aligned through sealing, shrinking, cooling and handling.

Approve Five Interfaces, Not a Polymer Name

The machine review should cover five interfaces.

Film-feed interface

Confirm roll width, diameter, core, fold or sleeve format, unwind direction, tension and tracking. A correct polymer with the wrong roll geometry is still incompatible.

Sealing interface

The seal system must create the required joint without burn-through, incomplete fusion, sticking or excessive residue. Use the machine manual and film supplier window as starting controls, then validate the package. The sealing temperature, dwell and pressure guide explains this interaction.

Tunnel interface

Film response depends on actual heat transfer, not the display temperature alone. Airflow, belt speed, load spacing and product mass change exposure. Use the tunnel temperature, airflow and conveyor-speed guide when building a validated setup.

Product interface

Heat-sensitive, easily crushed, sharp-edged, flexible or unstable products need sample testing. The product suitability guide helps screen these risks.

Finished-package interface

Do Not Choose Film by Gauge Alone

Gauge and width affect film use, seal load, heat response and package strength, but the thinnest film that runs once is not necessarily the most economical film. Rejects, rework, line speed, damage and changeover stability influence cost per accepted package. Define the roll and product geometry with the shrink film gauge and width guide.

Record a Material-Family Decision

Record the reason for choosing the material family before detailed setup begins:

  • Required package architecture and acceptable openings.
  • Exact film supplier, grade, construction, gauge and roll format.
  • Customer, product-contact or presentation requirements that govern approval.
  • Proposed sealer and tunnel configuration.
  • Representative products and downstream handling used in the trial.
  • Acceptance evidence and changes that require revalidation.
