Effective shrink wrap machine troubleshooting starts by separating a machine abnormality from a package-quality problem. Capture the exact alarm, failed motion, affected machine state and last known good cycle before changing a recipe or resetting the equipment. Then follow the machine manual and site safety procedure before any inspection that enters a guarded area or requires energy control.
Do not defeat an interlock, reach into moving equipment, or treat a recurring alarm as a setting problem. Stop and escalate when a guard, emergency stop, heater circuit, electrical component, pneumatic system, drive, or safety device is involved.
First Capture the Fault
Before changing settings, write down:
- Machine, line, date, time, operator and shift.
- SKU, product dimensions, orientation and product condition.
- Film supplier, material, gauge, width, lot and roll condition.
- Recipe or setting reference and the last known good run.
- Displayed alarm text or code, without paraphrasing it.
- Where the defect starts: infeed, film feed, seal, tunnel, discharge or downstream.
- What changed immediately before the problem.
- Photos or retained samples when site rules allow them.
Changing several variables at once destroys evidence. Return to an approved setup only when the manual and authorization allow it, then change one controlled variable at a time.

Identify the Failed Machine State
Map the event to the machine sequence rather than jumping to a component name. Record whether the equipment was waiting for product, detecting, feeding film, sealing, transferring, heating, shrinking or discharging when the sequence stopped. The state immediately before the alarm is often more useful to technical support than the operator’s suspected cause.
For an intermittent event, capture frequency and conditions: first cycle after start-up, after warm-up, only at a particular product gap, only after a film roll change, or only after downstream accumulation. Do not create the pattern by repeatedly resetting a safety-related or heat-related fault.
Separate External Conditions from Internal Faults
Confirm only the external conditions the operator is trained and authorized to observe:
- Correct product, film and approved recipe are selected.
- Product orientation and spacing match the validated setup.
- Visible film roll condition and threading match the machine diagram.
- Upstream and downstream equipment are in the expected operating state.
- Required site utilities show no known interruption.
- The exact alarm and machine state recur under the same conditions.
If those conditions are correct and the machine still fails to execute the approved sequence, preserve the evidence and escalate. Internal electrical, pneumatic, drive, heater, safety-circuit or guarded mechanical diagnosis belongs to authorized technical personnel using model-specific documentation.
Route Package-Quality Problems to the Process Guides

Return to machine troubleshooting when the approved setup no longer executes correctly: motion stops, a controlled value cannot be maintained, an alarm recurs, or a safety function reports a fault. Use Service History Without Replacing the Procedure

- Line-speed increase or product-spacing change.
- Utility interruption or compressed-air change.
- Long stop, cold start or restart after an alarm.
If the fault follows a new product or film, use the changeover checklist to determine whether the approved setup and first-piece release were completed.
Decide Whether to Run, Stop or Escalate
Stop and escalate when the condition involves exposed electrical risk, damaged guarding, ineffective interlocks, uncontrolled heat, smoke, fire risk, unexpected movement, pneumatic or mechanical energy, repeated safety trips, or any task outside the operator’s training.
The operator training and safety checklist should define who can reset a normal process alarm, who can adjust an approved setting, and who can perform service work. A reset is not a repair when the cause remains unknown.
Close the Incident with Evidence
Convert resolved incidents into controls:
- Record the verified cause and authorized corrective action.
- Record the machine state, alarm and evidence that confirmed recovery.
- Update an approved setting or changeover record only through the site’s change process.
- Add an inspection point to the preventive maintenance schedule when the verified cause supports it.
- Train operators on the observable symptom and escalation boundary.
- Track recurrence by machine, SKU, film lot, shift and operating state.
