Shrink wrap machine cost cannot be estimated responsibly from the machine label alone. The quote changes with package style, product envelope, sustained output, automation boundary, tunnel duty, utilities and the equipment included in the supplier’s scope. A useful budget therefore starts with a defined package and operating envelope, not a generic online price.
Separate the budget into three numbers: the supplier’s equipment quote, the installed project cost, and the ongoing cost per accepted package. This prevents a low base-machine price from hiding omitted conveyors, site work, validation or operating costs.
What Changes the Equipment Quote?

The quote should state the product range, film, target output and assumptions used to select each section. Without that basis, two prices may describe materially different systems.

Define the Equipment Boundary Before Comparing Price
Ask each supplier to identify what is included between the agreed infeed and discharge points. The equipment boundary can contain only a compact chamber unit, or it can include a sealer, tunnel, connection conveyors, cooling, controls, guarding and discharge handling.
For systems with a separate tunnel, compare the sealer and tunnel as one process. A tunnel selected without the product, film and sustained rate can make the base quotation look lower while leaving the proposed process incomplete.
Automation Changes More Than Labor
Moving from operator-led equipment to an automatic configuration can add product detection, film control, metering, conveyors, recipes, fault handling and line communication. The exact functions depend on the proposed system; “automatic” alone does not define what enters or leaves the quote.
Price the automation boundary against the actual product-arrival pattern. If products still require manual orientation, or if downstream equipment cannot accept the proposed rate, those constraints remain outside the wrapper unless the quotation explicitly includes a solution.
Add Installed Project Cost
Installed project cost sits outside the equipment price unless the quotation says otherwise. Typical budget headings include freight and delivery basis, unloading and placement, electrical and pneumatic site work, heat management, connection conveyors, plant safety review, commissioning, travel and training.
Do not design those items in the cost estimate. Assign a budget owner and confirm exclusions with the installation and site-readiness guide.

Model the Cost per Accepted Package
Film use
Film cost depends on roll price and the amount consumed per accepted package, including trim, start-up waste, rejects and changeover waste. Comparing only cost per roll hides differences in width, gauge, roll length and usable yield.
Labor
Record recurring labor by task: loading, positioning, replenishment, unloading, inspection, normal fault response and changeover. Use observed minutes by task and shift rather than assuming the proposed automation removes a complete position.
Energy and utilities
Record the nameplate requirements of the proposed configuration, then estimate consumption from the planned schedule and supplier documentation. Include compressed air or cooling only where the selected equipment requires it. Do not infer actual energy cost from connected load alone.
Maintenance and downtime
Budget planned cleaning and inspection, identified consumables, recommended spares and the service arrangement. Use the proposed bill of materials and maintenance documentation rather than a generic parts allowance.
